How It Began: A Spark Ignited at Korea University
My journey in international education began during my undergraduate years at Korea University, where I served as a teaching assistant for the International Summer School in 2008. Immersed in a dynamic mix of students and faculty from around the world, I discovered the profound interconnectedness education could foster. Motivated by a desire to deepen my global perspective, I sought opportunities to work in international higher education, eventually starting my career at Sungkyunkwan University. This experience kindled my passion for creating impactful cross-cultural programs.
Current Focus: Transforming Study Abroad Experiences
As the Center Director of IES Abroad Seoul, my work centers on designing immersive programs that blend academic rigor with cultural enrichment. Prioritizing global trends, I integrate sustainability and STEM themes into program offerings while ensuring diversity, equity, and inclusion remain core values. By empowering students from all backgrounds to thrive in international settings, I strive to leave a lasting impact on their academic and personal growth.
Fascination with Transnational Education and Policy Dynamics
One of the most intriguing aspects of international education is navigating the interplay of institutional policies, cultural contexts, and geopolitical influences. My tenure at SUNY Korea, the first U.S. university campus in South Korea, provided invaluable insights into managing academic programs across borders while respecting local traditions. Observing how policy shifts influence student mobility patterns continues to inspire my scholarly pursuits and strategic initiatives.
Future Trends: Digital Innovation and Inclusivity
Looking ahead, the integration of technology with experiential learning stands out as a transformative trend. Institutions like Minerva University exemplify innovative models by combining digital platforms with global city rotations. Additionally, advancements in AI-driven personalized learning hold immense potential to revolutionize student engagement. Alongside these innovations, fostering inclusivity remains critical, ensuring equitable access to global education for students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds.
Rewarding Moments: Fulbright and Beyond
Among my most rewarding experiences is my participation in the Fulbright Korea International Education Administrator (KIEA) Program. Engaging with U.S. education leaders and representing South Korea on an international stage reshaped my understanding of global education. Another memorable milestone was returning to my alma mater, Korea University, as an IES Center Director, bridging personal and professional milestones.
Overcoming Challenges: Redefining Career Pathways
Navigating the structural norms of South Korean higher education, where professionals often rotate across departments, posed significant challenges. Choosing to leave a stable role at Sungkyunkwan University to join SUNY Korea marked a turning point. This decision, guided by a personal manifesto emphasizing education’s transformative power, set the stage for a more innovative and globally oriented career path.
Reflections and Contributions
Reflecting on my journey, moments like co-authoring articles for the International Higher Education Journal and mentoring students underscore the profound impact education can have on individuals and communities. These milestones reaffirm my commitment to advancing international education and fostering cross-border understanding.
